Boswell Terms of Service

Last updated: 2026-05-17

TL;DR

Boswell today is sold as a one-time-purchase macOS app. When you buy a license, you keep it for the version you purchased plus any patch and minor-version updates inside that major version line — see Section 1 for the exact scope. We don't run a recurring-billing system today, and we don't hold your recordings on a server. If something goes wrong in the first 7 days, email us for a refund.

These Terms apply to copies of Boswell purchased through the direct-distribution channel at https://boswellapp.net. Mac App Store purchases are governed instead by Apple's Standard EULA (and you should consult those terms separately).

1. License grant

When you purchase a Boswell license, you receive a perpetual, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Boswell on your own personal Macs. There is no per-machine cap embedded in the license; activation is tied to the email address used at purchase. Reasonable use is anchored at the user, not the machine.

A purchased license entitles you to the version of Boswell at the time of purchase, plus any patch and minor-version updates released within that major version line (for example, a v1.0 license covers v1.0.x and v1.x). New major versions (v2.0, v3.0, ...) may require a separate purchase. If a paid major version ships, current license-holders will be notified and offered an upgrade.

2. Refund window

If Boswell does not work for you, request a refund within 7 days of purchase by emailing hello@boswellapp.net. We will issue a full refund through Stripe to the original payment method. After the 7-day window, refunds are issued at our discretion and are not guaranteed.

When a refund is issued, the corresponding license is marked revoked. The next time the affected Boswell installation contacts the license-validation endpoint (typically within 24 hours of opening the app), it will revert to the free feature set.

3. Transfer

License transfers between email addresses are handled manually through support. Email hello@boswellapp.net with the original purchase email, the proposed new email, and a short note about the reason. We may decline transfers we suspect are part of license resale.

4. Chargebacks

A chargeback initiated through your card issuer revokes the license tied to that payment. If the chargeback was initiated in error, contact hello@boswellapp.net within 14 days and we will discuss restoring the license.

5. No warranty

Boswell is provided as-is, with no warranty of fitness for any particular purpose. While we work hard to make Boswell reliable, we cannot guarantee that it will be free from defects, that transcriptions will be perfectly accurate, or that any feature will continue to work across future macOS releases. You should keep independent copies of any meeting recordings or transcripts that matter to you.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our total liability arising from your use of Boswell is limited to the amount you paid for the license.

6. Acceptable use

Don't use Boswell to record people who haven't consented to being recorded where consent is legally required (call this the "one-party-consent" responsibility — it rests with you, not us). Don't redistribute the Boswell binary or attempt to bypass the license-activation flow. Don't reverse-engineer the app beyond what local copyright law allows.

If we discover a license is being used in clear violation of these terms (for example, a single key activating on hundreds of machines beyond a reasonable user pattern), we may revoke that license without refund.

7. Privacy

Our handling of your data is described in our Privacy Policy. In short: Boswell is local-first; your recordings and transcripts stay on your Mac unless you explicitly choose to send them somewhere.

8. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms occasionally. Material changes will be announced via an in-app prompt and through the email address on file for licensed users. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page is the canonical signal. Continued use of Boswell after a Terms update constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

9. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.
